How can we be at our peak physical health in order to maximize our water time while surfing in Indonesia?
Travelling to wave rich, tropical surf destinations like Indonesia is going to guarantee you some serious water time and epic conditions because of the consistent, year round, swells. In order to maximize surf time, especially in areas like Lombok, where the waves are epic for all levels of surfers, there are various ways to maximize surf time under the Indonesian sun.
Some tips include:
1.) Nutrition:
Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean nutrition and health should go by the wayside. In fact, if you are serious about getting the best barrels and maintaining stamina for long sessions, for instance, you’re going to want to fuel your body with the best food for optimal performance. The amazing thing about Indonesia is the plethora of tropical fruits available.
Start your morning right, even if it’s still dawn, with healthy carbs/fruit/protein and water. It’s tempting to see pumping surf first thing in the morning and paddle out hastily with only a cup of coffee to hold you over, but this can lead you to dehydration and early burn out. Instead, opt for as a plate of fruit, granola, or wheat toast and eggs, for example.
You can find out about local food in our post here. Gerupuk Bay is famous for surfing- but it also has some secret diners that at lot of Kuta folk miss out on.
2) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
Another tempting thing to do in the tropics is to drink caffeine and alcohol all day. An example of this, is traveller often drink coffee or tea in the morning and then a beer at lunch and dinner without proper hydration.
What your body is really craving is WATER. Especially in the tropics when you are exerting paddling power. Caffeine and alcohol actually leach the body of nutrients and hydration, which is the last thing you need to function at your top performance, especially under the tropical sun. Keep a large bottle of water with you at all times and refill it all day! You’ll also find a product called Pocari Sweat here and it’s a great way to replenish electrolytes after a big sweat.
3.) Sun protection
You may be travelling from far away places to surf in Indonesia and aren’t necessarily used to the humidity or being out in the sun all day. Make sure you protect yourself-whether you are on the beach or in the water.
Do not forget to bring a long sleeve rash guard, board shorts, hat, and zinc/titanium based water resistant sunscreen that won’t rub off. Test it first! Bring your heartiest sunscreens on trips to the tropics, because believe me, you’ll need it.
All in all making the trip to Indonesia, specifically to the world class breaks in Lombok, for surf, is going to guarantee you hours and hours of beach and water time, so use the tips above to maximize this experience. You won’t regret it.
